Household Finance Dashboard / Builder case study

Household money, answered as computed views.

A studio account of a private household finance system — and of the fully synthetic public demo that shows its interface and approach.
The problem

Household money is scattered across accounts, cards, statements, and calendars. The questions that matter — what do we have, what is coming, are we on pace — need computed answers. A folder of raw tables and provider apps each show a slice and answer none of them.

Constraints
  • The working system is private household infrastructure; no real figure, account, or institution can be published.
  • The public artifact has to demonstrate the real interface and approach without exposing a single real number.
  • Every displayed number must be computed from the underlying records — a hand-maintained summary would drift from the truth it claims to show.
What the studio owned

The data model, the ingestion and reconciliation pipeline, every computed view, and the public demo build — the working system and its demo are both designed and built by the studio.

The build

Key decisions

  1. 1

A synthetic demo, fully isolated. The demo runs as its own deployment on a synthetic household dataset. It shares the working system's interface and approach and none of its data, connectors, or credentials.

  2. 2

Computed views over raw tables. Net worth, monthly cash flow, budget pace, and allocation against targets are all calculated from the records underneath, so the interface answers questions instead of displaying data.

  3. 3

Plain language first. Each view leads with the answer in plain words — what changed, what is next, where the low point lands — with the supporting detail underneath.

  4. 4

Deadlines are first-class data. Hard dates from leases, policies, benefits, and tax records sit on the home view next to the money, because the calendar is what moves the cash.

What the demo demonstrates

A home view with net worth and its monthly history; upcoming deadlines drawn from the records; monthly cash flow with a savings rate; budget pace for the current month; a 30-day outlook of bills, card payments, and paychecks with the projected low point of cash; accounts grouped by type and split by owner; and investment allocation measured against target bands. Every figure in the demo is synthetic, and the demo is read-only.

Current state

The working system is in active private use. The public demo is live, read-only, and labeled as a demo on its face; it is the only public surface of this build.
