BestOKC / Builder case study
A local directory built on checked facts.
Local discovery runs on thin, unverified listings. Aggregator directories recycle strangers' reviews, stale hours, and details nobody has checked, so a local guide built the same way would inherit the same rot. BestOKC exists to answer a narrower question well: which Oklahoma City places are worth your time, with every published fact checked against an official source.
- Every published fact must trace to the place's official website or a public-agency source.
- Imagery is published only from rights-cleared sources, with the source recorded for each listing.
- No paid placement — a listing's position is never for sale.
- Facts go stale, so the directory has to be an operating practice, not a one-time scrape.
The site, the listing pipeline, the editorial standards, and the verification loop — designed, built, and operated end to end by the studio.
The build
Key decisions
- 1
Curation over volume. A place is listed only when it has a verifiable Oklahoma City location, an official website or public-agency listing, and publicly available contact information.
- 2
Official sources, or it doesn't ship. Hours, addresses, and contact details come from each place's official website or a public-agency source — never from another directory's copy.
- 3
Credibility fixes over growth copy. An in-house rating score the studio could not stand behind was removed entirely rather than rescaled, and claims the site could not support — personal visits, local editors — were taken off the site instead of softened.
- 4
Rights-cleared imagery, with provenance. Photos are added listing by listing from sources cleared for use, and the source is recorded with the listing. A listing without a cleared photo ships without one.
- 5
Enrichment as a loop, not a batch. Descriptions and photos are upgraded listing by listing through a reviewed pipeline, so real verified copy replaces templated text over time instead of being bulk-generated once.
Verified state
BestOKC is live at bestokc.com with 500 published listings across 10 categories — restaurants are the largest category, with 172. Of the 500 listings, 345 carry a photo from a rights-cleared source, 498 link to the business's own website, and 484 publish a phone number. Counts were checked against the live site on October 26, 2026. Listings are reviewed on a weekly cycle, and outdated listings are corrected or pulled.
